It is not clear who started Free Fruit for Kids in supermarkets. Tesco in the UK claim they did in mid-2016. But they are incorrect. Was it Woolworths Australian supermarkets in November 2015? We think not. It was Woolworths-owned Countdown Supermarkets in New Zealand in October 2015. But that is probably not important.

With this scheme parents can grab free fruit from stands in the fruit and vegetable aisle or near the store entrance for their children to snack on while they do their shopping. There are several reasons behind the scheme:

• To inspire a healthier Australia
• To keep kids happy and occupied whilst shopping. Everyone knows happy kids equate to happy parents. As a result, parents who avail themselves of the free fruit program tend to stay in the store longer resulting fuller shopping baskets or trolleys.
• To encourage children to eat more fruit and get one of their 5-a-day
• To contributes to making the shopping journey of the parents a little easier while they do their shopping

All are important. But in our opinion, the most important reasons supermarkets should adopt this scheme is that it shows they have an understanding and sensitivity to the needs of their customers. And they have a desire to improve their customers shopping experience.

The stands with Real Wicker Baskets are made from real willow tree branches and are preferred by stores that appreciate a more natural look for their displays. But please note, Real Wicker Baskets are not as durable as the Polywicker Baskets.

Floor Stands with Wooden Crates are an alternative to those with Polywicker Baskets. Select from stands with several styles of crates in natural, chocolate, black or white colours. Optional Liners are available to increase their economic life. Most include castors so they are easy to move to different areas in your store to maximise their effect. Some stores prefer to locate them in their produce departments. Others at the entrance to the store.

Wooden Display Barrels and Stands are one of the most popular ways to add rustic charm to a Free Fruit For Kids display . Select from two barrel colours and a range of sizes. Simply invert and stack the barrels or add one of the Barrel Display Stands to create the display. One advantage of Wooden Barrel displays is that optional false bottoms are available to dummy up the displays. These require less produce to create an abundant looking display. Waste is reduced.
